Lhasa is the center of Tibetan Buddhists as well as the centre of politics, economy, and culture too. It lies in the south-central part of the Tibet region. Lhasa covered 30,000 sq km of area and the population is just 400,000.

How to get there in Lhasa?

Lhasa, Tibet tour is not possible without the direct involvement of a Travel Agency. A travel agency will assure you of everything like means of transportation, travel guide, food and accommodation with your Lhasa, Tibet tour you need to take the help of a travel agency in Kathmandu. The travel agency needs at least 6 weeks to manage everything in Lhasa, Tibet regarding your upcoming tour.

There are only two options to get there in Lhasa, Tibet from Kathmandu. One is by air and another is travel overland.

There was only one overland travel route from Kathmandu to Lhasa via the Tatopani border (Zhangmu-Kodari) and that was destroyed by a devastating earthquake in 2015. After 2 years, in August 2017, a border to connect Nepal and Tibet was opened. The name of the border is Kerung Border (Gyirong Port). It is 160km away from Kathmandu. But, there is a piece of good news is that for the goods export and import purpose the Tatopani border was reopened at the end of May 2019. Maybe, in the future, travelers also can travel through this route too.

Kathmandu – Lhasa and vice versa is one of the most convenient options for tourists. It will take around one and a half hours per flight from Kathmandu or from Lhasa. There is many airlines operation their flight on this route.

Day 01

06-07 hours drive to Kerung Border from Kathmandu (BB)

Early morning scenic drive to Kerung border of China (Tibet). On the way you will have a look of beautiful Nepalese countryside. After border formalities at Nepalese immigration, you will experience an hour adventurous uphill drive by jeep or bus (normally). If there is landslide, you have to walk uphill for two hours or check in a Hotel. If not then continue drive to Kerung and stay overnight at a Guest house. Today, around 06 to 07 hours drive covers 145 km of the road. (BB)

Day 02

Drive to Tingri (4300m/14108ft)/Lhatse (4350m/14272ft) from Kerung. (BB)

After breakfast, you will uphill drive to the highest plateau of the world with the typical view of Tibetan landscape. You can experience like, standing on the roof of the world. From here, you can view the panoramic view of Himalayan ranges including Mt. Cho Oyu (8201m/26906ft) & Mt. Xishapangma (8012m/26286ft). From Tingri, you can also enjoy the view of Mt. Everest (8848m/29029ft). Today you will drive around 225 km to 244 km. Stay overnight in a Guesthouse at Tingri. (BB)

Day 03

Drive to Xigatse (3900m/12795ft) from Tingri/Lhatse. (BB)

Continue scenic drive from Tingri to Xigatse passing over Gyatchu La (5220m/17126ft) (the highest pass en route to Lhasa via Lhatse). This is the point where a road to Mt. Kailash bifurcates to the west. Today you will drive around 244 km in total. Stay overnight in a Hotel in Xigatse. (BB)

Day 04

Drive to Gyantse (3950m/12959ft) from Xigatse (BB)

In the morning, you will have a sightseeing tour to the Panchen Lama's Tashilhumpu Monastery. After the tour you will continue the drive to Gyantse and visit to the Kumbum Stupa and Phalkor Monastery. Today, you will drive around 90 km. Stay overnight in a Hotel in Gyantse. (BB)

Day 05

Drive to Lhasa (3650m/11975ft) from Gyantse (BB)

A full day scenic drive to Lhasa. On the way, you will cross Karola (5010m/16437ft), Kambala (4749m/15581ft), colorful Yamdrok-Tso Lake and the Tibetan lifline river Bramha Putra (Yarlung Tsangpo). Today, you will drive around 261 km in total . Stay overnight in a Hote in Lhasa. (BB)

Day 06-07

Two full day sightseeing in Lhasa city (BB)

Two full day sightseeing tour in Lhasa including Barkhor Bazar, Jokhang Temple, Potala Palace and Sera Monasteries. Stay two overnights in a Hotel in Lhasa. (BB)

Day 08

Fly back from Lhasa to Kathmandu.

Early morning drive to Gonggar airport or train station for your departure flight to Kathmandu or to your onward destination.
